Halloween Pet Safety Tips

Halloween is the spookiest time of the year but keeping your pets safe doesn’t have to be tricky. Here are some Halloween Pet Safty Tips from Lakewood Pet Vet on how to keep your pet safe during the festivities:

Keep Your Pets Indoors

Not every pet may be a fan of the noises that Halloween brings, so to limit the stress and anxiety your pet could experience, you can keep them indoors. If your pet isn’t very social, it’s probably best to keep them indoors and away from the door. With the number of trick-or-treaters that may come to the door, it is best to keep pets who are not sociable away from the door and in a separate room where they can be comfortable. With the amount of people coming to the door, it can make some pets anxious and stressed and increase the possibility of them heading to the door and running away.

Be Careful With Costumes

For some pets, wearing a costume can cause undue stress. If you choose to dress your pet for Halloween, make sure the costume does not restrict their breathing, movement, sight, bark, or meow. Also, ensure that the costume has no small, easy-to-chew-off pieces to avoid any possibilities of choking or obstruction.

Keep Candy Out Of Reach

While chocolate and candy can be a delicious treat for us, make sure that it stays out of reach from your pet. Candy can be poisonous to our pets, so keep candy and candy wrappers out of reach from your pets to avoid any incidents. In the chance that your pet does consume any candy, call your veterinarian or take your pet to the emergency room as soon as possible to get evaluated. Some common signs that your pet has ingested candy and is going through toxicity are if your pet starts showing signs of vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and weakness.

Keep Halloween Decorations Out Of Reach

When decorating your home with Jack-O-Lanterns and other Halloween decorations, make sure they are out of reach of your pet. A lit pumpkin, if toppled over by a curious puppy or kitten, can start a fire, or they may even try to get a little nibble from other home decorations you may have outside or inside your home.

Make Sure Your Pet Is Chipped or Has the Correct Identification

In case your pet does run away from home, make sure that your pet has the proper identification to increase the chances of your pet coming home. A collar with updated ID tags and a microchip can be a lifesaver for a lost pet.
